Guru Nanak Dev University was established in Amritsar in 1969 to commemorate the quincentenary birth celebration of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It is a multi-faceted university spread over an area of 202.34 hectares. The faculties of Engineering, Commerce, Economics, Humanities, Agriculture and Forestry, Food and Fermentation Technology, various other life sciences, Ayurveda system of medicine and Physical Education have in all 35 departments under their aegis. Among these the department of Chemistry and Human Genetics have been accorded international recognition. The University is running highly professional courses such as Bachelor of Technology in Electronics and Telecommunication, Master of Business Administration, Master of Commerce, Master of Computer Application, Master of Personal Management and Industrial Relations, Master of City and Regional Planning, B. Arch. to mention a few. Carefully nurtured by illustrious academicians, the University has carved a place for itself on the academic a map of India. Guru Nanak Dev University has been reaccredited with highest A Grade by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore. This grading is on the basis of the excellent track record in teaching fundamental & applied research, work culture and sports activities. The University has made significant improvement in its performance since its Five Star accreditation in 2000. With this, the Guru Nanak Dev University has become the 1st University in the country to get reaccredited under the new rigorous and stringent guidelines of National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC). Even, the University was the first in Northern India to get FIVE STAR Accreditation from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in April 2000. According to the UGC rating, GNDU is India's fastest growing university denoting its dynamic enterprise and multifaceted outlook. The university has won the Maulana Abul Kalam Trophy for Inter-varsity sports, a record number of 21 times since 1978. Sports itself is an integral part of campus life along with academics. The University is committed in creating a caring environment to cultivate education for professional life. Over the years, the University has built up an excellent academic infrastructure in the form of a well stocked computerized library, state of the art laboratories, Academic Staff College, All India Services Training Centre, Instrumentation Centre, Computer Centre, 24 hours internet facility, Placement Unit etc. To promote research among its faculty, almost all the departments have been provided with independent computer facilities and departmental library. In addition to the academics, the University has also facilitated for recreational and all round development of its students. Faculty in the form of Department of Youth Services, National Service Scheme, Conference Hall, Sports Hostel , Health Centre, Student's Centre, two separate holiday homes at Dalhousie for teachers and students, working women hostel along with on campus residential facilities for a large number of students, teacher and administrative staff.
