The
Department of Biotechnology at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar was
established in 1991 by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of
India and is a constituent of National Network of thirty plus centres
imparting job-oriented training to the students in Biotechnology. The
Department is offering a two-year degree programme leading to M.Sc.
in Biotechnology since 1991 and also introduced M.Sc. programme in Bioinformatics
from the session 2006-07. The department admits the students to a Postgraduate
Biotechnology Programme through an All India Combined Entrance Test
(AICET) conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and university
test for admission to M.Sc. Bioinformatics programme. The students selected
through AICET in Biotechnology are awarded a scholarship of Rs. 1200.00
P.M. throughout the two years of their study.
The
DISC at Department of Biotechnology was established in the 1995 by DBT,
GOI. Since its inception, the DISC has procured various softwares like
Microsoft Office 2000, SQL Server 2000, Borland Turbo c++ Suite, Visual
Studio, Sigma Stat, Sigma Plot 2001, (V-7.1), Grafit version 4, Minitab
13.3, Lasergene-5 Sequence Analysis, Exome, Exome Blast software. In
addition, students and faculty members are also subscribing to different
databases like Medline, Agricola, Agris, Life Science Collection, Food
Science & Technology, Biotechnology Abstracts for facilitating literature
search. So far about 20,000 users, comprising of students and teachers
of Guru Nanak Dev University and neighboring Institutes have availed
the services of the Centre. The DISC has 512 kbps leased line internet
connectivity. In the last nine years, DISC has organized seven workshops
in Bioinformatics benefiting more than 130 research scholars and young
faculty. |
