The Department of History was established in 1971. The department offers the courses at M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. levels. It offers specialization in Medieval and Modern Indian History with major thrust on social, cultural, urban, structure of power, art, literature, religious and economic aspects. The department incorporates in its syllabi the latest research work being done on the subject. It has produced a large number of doctoral theses and monographs related to the thrust areas.

One of the objectives of the University is to promote research in humanities, and to promote Punjab Studies. The Department has paid special attention to the study of history as a value-oriented discipline and focuses on the social and cultural life of the region of the Punjab as its main areas of research.

M.A. History : B.A. (Hons), Bachelor in Social Sciences (Hons School) under (10+2+3) system or Bachelor Degree in any faculty under (10+2+3) system with at least 50% marks or any other examination equivalent thereto or at least 45% marks in the subject of History or Sociology or Public Administration in B.A. under 10+2+3 system.

M.Phil. : M.A. in History with at least 55% marks.

Admission to both the courses is made exclusively on the basis of the merit in the Entrance Test.
