Department of Physics
The Department of Physics was created in 1972 with appointment of two
lecturers. It was catering to the needs of Chemistry and Biology
departments from 1972-1979. The teaching programme of the department
started at the level of B.Sc. (Honours School) in 1979 and M.Sc. (Honours
School) in 1982. Now the Department of Physics offers courses leading to
the degrees of B.Sc. (Honours School), M.Sc. (Honours School),
M.Sc.(Honours), M.Phil and Ph.D programmes. These courses have been
designed keeping in view the recent advances and developments in the
relevant research fields and also in accordance with the UGC norms at par
with IIT and Central Universities.
The new equipments are being
continuously added and the laboratories are refurnished and even sustained
efforts are being made by the faculty members to improve the
infrastructure by generating more funds for research through various
National and International organizations. The department has its own
library having a good collection of books with multiple copies of text
books, reference books etc. A much large collection of books of Physics
are also available in the Central library of the University. The
department has its own well equipped Computer laboratory for
students/research students in addition to the main computer centre. The
airy classrooms with adequate furniture and equipped with overhead
projector/multimedia projectors are also available. The students success
rate is 100%.
Experimental research facilities leading to Ph.D. degree have been
established in the thrust areas of Nuclear Geophysics, Material Science &
Nanosciences, Plasma Physics and Nuclear and High Energy Physics. At
present more than 56 students are working for Ph.D Degrees in these
research fields. The teachers are encouraged to participate in the
refresher courses, workshops, orientation courses and National &
International conferences. The department has organized about half a dozen
conferences and workshops during last 5 years. In the last 5 years the
faculty members have attended many National/International conferences,
received awards & recognitions and published more than 274 research papers
in National and International Journals of repute. Some faculty members are
also having research collaborations with National and International
Institutions. The scientists of international repute were invited to
deliver special lectures/talks in diverse fields to the students and
faculty members. The faculty of the department have been sanctioned
several projects by various funding agencies like BRNS, CSIR, DST, DRDO,
DAE, UGC etc. The department has been adopted by the UGC under Special
Assistance Programme (SAP) and DST under FIST Programme. Under SAP
programme, a centre of excellence in Material Science will be going to
establish soon. During the last five years, the department has received
more than Rs. 2.18 Crores of research grant in around 19 research projects
from various Scientific National Originations.
