The department was established in 1970. The teaching programmes of the Department lay emphasis on fundamental and applied aspects of Psychology such as Experimental Psychology, Health Psychology, Applied Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Counselling & Applied counseling, Cognition, Motivation, Statistics and Research Methods in Psychology. To develop an orientation towards research among the students, projects have been made compulsory at post graduation level.

The department revises the syllabi from time to time keeping in view the UGC curriculum, in consultation with the subject expert from other universities. Major national level competitive exams conducted by UGC, UPSC, PPSC etc. have also been kept in mind while revising the syllabi.

Excellent research facilities are also available. Research fellowships sponsored by outside agencies like the UGC, ICSSR, BPRDO, etc, can be availed of to pursue Doctoral level research.

The major thrust areas of the department are Psychometrics and Research Methodology, Experimental/ Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology and Counselling/Therapeutic Techniques.

• Apart from text books, there are Encyclopedias, Research Journals and Dissertations (M.A., M. Phil., Ph. D).

The department has a well equipped laboratory which includes :

• Audio-visual system

• Dark room facility

• 4hour/week practical training is provided to the students in conducting experiments and psychological testing.

• The Department has well equipped laboratories for Experimental Psychology, Biofeedback, Psychological Testing and Projective Psychology
