The Department of Sociology was set up in the year 1976. Since then it has been continuously progressing and has achieved excellence in teaching and research. This Department has been recognized as "Center for Special Assistance" by the U.G.C. under its Special Assistance Programme. The Department boasts of having highly qualified and experienced Faculty. The department has a well- furnished and spacious library consisting of 6000 books, research reports and 24 different journal of national and international repute. The Department of Sociology since 1980 has been publishing its own journal "Guru Nanak Journal of Sociology" in which the Research activities, Book Reviews and Communications are published.

Courses Offered:

The department offers following courses :

• M.A. Sociology

• M.Phil.

• Ph.D.

The eligibility for M.A. course is:

• B.A. (Hons.) under 10+2+3 system

• OR Bachelors degree in any faculty under 10+2+3 system with at least 50 % marks in aggregate

• OR at least 45 % in the subject of Sociology in B.A. under 10+2+3 system.

The eligibility for M.Phil course is:

• M.A. in Sociology with at least 55 % marks or equivalent grade point average.

The eligibility for Ph.D:

• M.A. in Sociology with 55 % marks.

The Admission to the M. A. and M. Phil and Ph. D courses is based exclusively on the merit of a candidate in the Entrance Test to be conducted by the Department / University.

Field Visits
Annually, students have field visits to various parts of the country:

• to provide exposure to students for understanding various social practices and institutions.

• to provide an opportunity for students to learn through field work so as to develop social research skills and techniques

Seminars and Conferences

• The department regularly organizes seminars / conferences / workshops on various social issues.

• Students are highly encouraged to participate in such seminars / conferences as the process of learning

.

• Students are also given platforms, not only to participate, but also to plan and organize various activities of seminars / conferences for their professionalism.
